I decided to go see one of my favourite retailers.

I was running low on incense, candles and a bit of laughter. I needed a trip to The Mystic Bookshop, more for my heart, rather that the sundries that my cabinet was low on.

Before becoming a parent, I really didn’t get the whole “back to school” thing. Why on earth would parents get teary eyed and hyper because their children went back to school? The shopping, haircuts and the dreaded First Day of School.

My daughter’s first day of Kindergarten was filled with elation and joy. She was thrilled to be going to school…how long could that last, I wondered. Every day was met with the same excitement for learning. I’ll admit, we started building it up in late August with the new stuff for school. The pristine Pooh Bear pencil case filled with new pencils, erasers, pencil crayons and wax crayons…all very carefully chosen for their various merits by my daughter. The running shoes that lit up whenever her feet touched the ground, as I was told then…”it will help me see where I’m going”. Weak as I am against her charm…I buckled. I became one of those parents. I did, however, draw the line at the faux fur coat that caught her eye. At least there was some hope for me. Last, but certainly not least…the back pack. The Bear in the Big Blue House won out over Blues Clues, for which I am profoundly grateful. It has been a very interesting summer, to say the least. Filled with laughter and the seemingly constant and endless cry of “ROAD TRIP!” My funny wee family has had a great time, and so have I.

I have learned so much in the process. I’ve learned that with the right person, clothes shopping can be a blast…even if I do wind up looking like a busty milkmaid. I’ve learned that there is a seemless transition between being friends and being family, when it is the right fit. I’ve learned to shut my mouth when I don’t have the right words. I’ve learned that my best friend is a Domme.

My lovely daughter heard about The Wheels Inn in Chatham and decided to ramp up her campaign for a mini-break.

I can’t blame her really. The last couple of years we have stayed pretty close to home in the summer, opting for day trips to the beach and other points of interest. To her credit, she has been very tolerant and undemanding over the last two years with all the upheaval in our lives. My kid is pretty darn amazing, actually.

So, being the dutiful Mom that I try to be, I got online and started checking availability for a weekend we had free. Lo and behold, they had a special on and rooms available. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I booked our room. Further inspection of the site inspired panic…I would have to don a bathing suit, worse yet…I would have to go shopping for a bathing suit. The horror!! Well…it is for a good cause.
